How to Fit a Roman Blind

Fitting a Roman blind is straightforward with the right preparation. Follow these steps for a secure and level installation, whether fitting inside or outside the window reveal.

What You’ll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Drill and suitable drill bits
  • Wall plugs (for masonry or plasterboard)
  • Screws (not supplied) – choose the right type for your wall
  • Screwdriver
  • Spirit level

Step-by-Step Fitting Guide

1. Unpack and Check

Ensure you have all components: blind, brackets, headrail, chain mechanism, and child safety device. Confirm your finished measurements match the product.

2. Mark Bracket Positions

For recess fitting (inside the window reveal):

  • Hold brackets at the top of the recess, spaced evenly near each end.
  • Ensure they clear any window handles or obstructions.
  • Use a spirit level and pencil to mark screw holes.

For face fitting (outside the window reveal):

  • Position brackets about 10cm above the reveal and mark with a pencil.
  • Allow extra width on each side for light coverage (usually at least 5cm).
  • Use a spirit level to ensure alignment before marking holes.

3. Drill and Fix the Brackets

Drill at the marked points. Insert wall plugs if necessary, then attach brackets using appropriate screws.

Note: Screws are not supplied – select the right fixings for your wall type.

4. Attach the Blind

Slot or clip the blind’s headrail into the brackets. Ensure it’s securely fastened and level.

5. Install the Child Safety Device

Fit the cord or chain tensioner to the wall or inside the reveal. It must be under tension while allowing smooth movement. This is legally required in the UK.

6. Test the Blind

Raise and lower the blind to check for smooth operation and correct alignment.

Final Tips

  • Face fitting offers better light control for blackout blinds.
  • Ceiling fitting inside the reveal helps avoid handle obstructions.
  • If unsure about drilling into masonry, tiles, or steel, consider a professional installer.
