Curtain Measuring Guides

Step 1: Measuring the Width

Using a Pole or Track

  • Poles: Measure the width excluding the decorative end finials.
  • Tracks: Measure the full length of the track.

For our made-to-measure curtain service, this is all we need — we’ll add the necessary allowances.

Additional Considerations

  • Add an extra 6–8cm per curtain for a comfortable overlap where curtains meet in the centre.
  • If you’d like the curtain edges to return from the pole or track back to the wall:
    • Measure the distance from the eyes of the rings or gliders to the wall on each side.
    • Add both return measurements to the total width.
  • For a single curtain, note whether it will hang on the left or right.
Note: If you’ve planned for returns, the curtain top must sit lower than the pole — otherwise, the pole will obstruct the fabric.

Step 2: Measuring the Finished Length

The finished length is the measurement from the top of the curtain to the bottom hem.

Always measure the drop in three places: left, centre, and right of the track or pole. Where measurements vary, choose the one that works best for the space.

Tab Top Headings

  • Measure from the top of the pole to the desired hem.
  • Add the diameter of the pole to account for fabric lost when threading the tabs.

Eyelet Headings

  • Measure from the top of the pole to the hem — this is your eyelet drop.
  • Add 3.5cm to account for the fabric above the eyelet.

Pencil Pleat / Gathered Headings

  • Measure from the eye of the ring or glider to the bottom hem — this is the hook drop.
  • Add 3.5cm to reach the full curtain length above the hook position.

All Other Heading Styles

  • Decide where you want the top of the curtain to finish:
    • Tracks: Align the top of the curtain with the top of the track.
    • Poles: The curtain can sit level with the top, centre, or bottom of the pole.
  • Measure from this chosen point down to the bottom hem — this gives you the finished length.

Not Yet Fixed a Pole or Track?

Ideally, fit your pole or track before taking measurements. If that’s not possible:

  1. Decide on the type of pole or track you’ll be using.
  2. Determine where it will be installed:
    • We recommend that poles or tracks overhang the window by at least 15cm (6") on either side.
    • Fix the pole or track at least 8cm (3") above the window recess.
  3. Use these estimated positions to take your measurements, following the steps above.

You may find it helpful to mark the intended top and bottom positions lightly with a pencil before measuring.
